Faster and more stable Netscape performance has been achieved with a RAM disk. This was tried on Netscape 4.76 mounted on an iMac with Mac OS 9.1 after a problem with a bloated, and possibly corrupt, 'History' file. So far performance is much improved.
This is what was done:
Created a 20 MB RAM disk set to save on shutdown
Restarted
Trashed the history file and cache from Preferences/'Netscape Users'
Put a copy of 'Netscape Users' folder onto the RAM disk
Replaced the 'Netscape Users' folder in Preferences with an alias to the RAM disk equivalent
Removed the word 'alias' and the space before it from the alias name
Started Netscape
The following steps are optional:
Put 'about:globalhistory' in the location box and hit return
Put a bookmark to it above 'Personal Toolbar Folder'.
Another tip:
Remove the Bookmarks.html file from Preferences and put it elsewhere on the disk. Netscape will generate a new Bookmarks file. Open the old Bookmarks file with Netscape and bookmark it. Bloated bookmark files confused older versions of Netscape but this tip often solved the problem.
